Letter From the Editor

It is my pleasure to present my last issue as Editor-in-chief of Hibou. I’ve seen it grow into a community of thinkers ready to ruffle some feathers. While we have a lot of growing to do, I have total faith in new Editors-in-chief, Faith Witham and David Sohmer, and their ability to nurture our warm parliament of owls and owlets.

With our publication of the AUP Student Union’s Call to Action, I received feedback that this was too biased. Hibou is not trying to be a news source, we are in the business of provoking thought and compassionate critical engagement. As I excitedly create space for new editors, I demand the following:

Let Hibou Magazine never be neutral. Let us be fair, well-balanced, and representative, but never, ever neutral. No one is ever unbiased, the danger is when we pretend to be.

In the words of Desmond Tutu, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”
